Steller sea lions are listed as “near threatened,” while South American and Californian sea lions are classified as “least concern.”

Unfortunately, the Japanese sea lion is considered extinct. No official sightings have existed since the late 1950s, primarily due to hunting.

Environmental Challenges

Sea lions encounter various environmental threats that jeopardize their populations globally.

Climate change is a significant factor, affecting their food sources through rising ocean temperatures, slowing currents, and decreasing fish availability.

Rising sea levels also threaten their coastal resting and mating areas. Additionally, pollution, bycatch, entanglement, and disease pose severe risks to their health and population dynamics.

These factors can have detrimental effects on the health and population dynamics of sea lions across all species (IFAW).

At Los Cabos

I used to live in Los Cabos for some time and worked here as a boat captain in one of Cabo San Lucas' leading tour companies. Back then, I came for 6 months but stayed for 18.
