Explore the four guides

01 · Oasis & excursions

Santiago

Begin with palms, village streets and a traditional meal, then choose one main excursion. Fox Canyon and its Sol de Mayo waterfall offer one direction. A hosted visit in San Dionisio offers another.

Santiago works well when you want a village stop and time in the surrounding landscape. Give your chosen excursion room in the schedule.

02 · Village food & crafts

Miraflores

Let breakfast or lunch set the pace. Miraflores brings together regional cooking, sweets and the leatherworking traditions associated with rural Baja.

Browse workshops and small shops, ask how things are made and leave time for the village centre. It is an appealing choice for a day centred on food and crafts.

03 · Ranch traditions

La Candelaria

The countryside inland from Cabo San Lucas opens onto a village known for its church, crafts and ranch connections. Food and the heritage of sugar-cane milling give a visit its own character.

Choose a village walk, a hosted meal or an available demonstration. Arrange a particular ranch or workshop visit in advance so the experience you want shapes the day.

04 · A day with a ranch host

San Dionisio & Rancho El Refugio

Travel through Santiago toward San Dionisio Canyon for a closer look at ranch life. At El Refugio, cooking, leatherwork and the surrounding land provide different ways to learn from a local host.

Ask about the combination that interests you: a meal, food preparation, a craft visit or a guided canyon walk. Make the ranch experience the main outing.

Choose the route before combining stops

Miraflores and Santiago fit the inland journey north from San José del Cabo. San Dionisio is a separate excursion approached through Santiago. La Candelaria belongs to a different inland outing from the Cabo San Lucas side.

A short Miraflores visit and time in Santiago can complement each other. For a substantial ranch experience or canyon walk, centre the day on that destination. Enjoy La Candelaria on its own outing rather than trying to include all four places in one circuit.

For the wider mountain setting, read our Sierra de la Laguna guide. For the waterfall excursion, continue to Fox Canyon.

Plan a hot-springs outing through Santiago

For a day centred on natural pools and canyon scenery, compare Santa Rita and El Chorro in our hot springs guide. Choose one as the main excursion and leave time for a meal or village walk in Santiago.

Explore Boca de la Sierra near Miraflores

Build a Miraflores day around village food and a countryside outing. Our Boca de la Sierra guide covers birdwatching, streamside scenery and the access details to confirm before travelling.

Add an East Cape visit or a longer regional day

La Ribera: take the village day toward the coast for a meal, beach time and the East Cape landscape. Our La Ribera guide explains how the town differs from Cabo Pulmo and how to plan the two as separate stops.

El Triunfo: travel farther north for mining history, museums and village dining. This is in La Paz municipality, beyond Los Cabos, and deserves a longer outing. Use our El Triunfo day-trip guide to choose museums and plan the return journey.

More village days beyond Los Cabos

Todos Santos: choose a Pacific-side day of historic streets, galleries and food. Our Todos Santos guide helps you build the town visit around a meal and decide whether to add a coastal stop.

San Antonio: combine a walk around the town plaza with nearby El Triunfo’s museums. Read our San Antonio guide for the mining-town visit and the distinction between a village stroll and an arranged historic trail. Both San Antonio and Todos Santos are in La Paz municipality.

Desert plants and an arranged ranch day

El Rosario and the Cactus Sanctuary: explore the desert-plant setting near the historic mining towns. Our El Rosario guide covers the village, the sanctuary and the access arrangements to confirm before travelling.

Rancho Cacachilas: choose an advance-booked ranch experience near El Sargento, with guided outdoor and culinary options. Our Rancho Cacachilas guide explains the meeting point, seasonal visiting and how to select a suitable outing. Both destinations are in the wider La Paz region.

Spend longer around La Ventana and El Sargento

For wind sports, time beside the Sea of Cortez and a base near Rancho Cacachilas, read our La Ventana and El Sargento guide. This is a longer regional excursion or short stay in La Paz municipality, with activity plans shaped by the conditions.

A Pacific-side outing at Migriño

For open coastal scenery, sunset light and organised desert adventures north of Cabo San Lucas, read our Migriño guide. It explains how to plan the shore visit or compare a guided outing, with current beach conditions shaping the day.

Choose a birdwatching outing

Look at the countryside through its bird habitats, from a San José wetland visit to streamside scenery near Miraflores and Santiago’s oasis. Our Los Cabos birdwatching guide helps you choose a setting, prepare for a first outing and compare guided experiences.

Plan a rewarding rural day

Start with one experience. Pick the meal, workshop, village or walk that matters most. Arrange it with the host or operator, then build your other stops around it.

Match transport to the destination. A car gives flexibility for village stops. A guided outing can add local interpretation and transport to a rural property. Confirm the final approach with your host and save directions before leaving.

Leave time for the people. A conversation with a cook or craftsperson can become the highlight of the day. Buy directly from makers when something catches your eye and ask before entering private workspaces.

Pack for time outdoors. Bring water, sun protection, comfortable footwear and pesos for small purchases. Add walking shoes if your chosen outing includes canyon terrain.
