The Arch of Cabo San Lucas, also known as El Arco, is located at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. It is a stunning natural rock formation that has become a symbol of Cabo San Lucas.

The arch, part of the Cabos San Lucas Marine Reserve, is a must-see for tourists visiting the area. It is one of the most popular attractions in Los Cabos.

Why is the arch in Cabo famous?

The monument is famous for its unique natural rock formation. Sitting at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, it also marks the southernmost tip of the North American Continent.

This arch is a natural wonder formed over thousands of years of erosion from the sea and wind. It is a breathtaking sight that draws in many tourists from all over the world. People come to marvel at its beauty and to take pictures.

Activities all around

Aside from its natural beauty, the area is also famous for its many activities.

Unique natural and cultural history

El Arco is also famous for its unique history. It is said that the arch was once part of a larger cave that collapsed due to erosion, leaving behind the iconic rock formation that we see today.

The arch has been a landmark for sailors and fishermen for centuries.

What happened to the arch at Cabo San Lucas?

Over millions of years, the powerful waves of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez formed the Cabo San Lucas arch. However, in 2017, Hurricane Lidia caused a portion of the arch to collapse, changing its appearance.

Despite this, the arch remains an impressive sight and continues to attract visitors from around the world.

Arch of Cabo San Lucas tours

There are many tours available that will take you to see the monument. Some tours include snorkeling and diving, while others offer sunset cruises or whale watching.

Regardless of the tour you select, you will undoubtedly be astounded by the natural beauty of the arch and its surrounding area.

Can you see the Cabo Arch from the Land?

Yes, you can see the Cabo Arch from the land. You can do that from a distance and be at the right angle. (The total distance is 3.65 km or 2.26 mi).

You have to go to an area called Cabo Bello. Very close to the famous restaurant “Sunset Mona Lisa.”

There, at Cabo Bello, walking to the edge of the cliffs or the restaurant, you will see the Arch and the entire rock formation in its glory. It is truly a spectacular view.

If you want a closer view, your next best option is a boat tour or kayaking.

When can you walk under the arch in Cabo?

Generally, it is not possible to walk under the Arch of Cabo. The arch is located in the middle of the ocean and can only be reached by boat.

An option to walk under the arch happens due to a rare phenomenon. This rare phenomenon happens every 3-4 years or so.

It is unclear if the reciting of the ocean at a king low tide event is responsible for the event or if an accumulation of sand under the arch formation could be the reason. A combination of the two is likely to be the truth.

Depending on the currents and the tide every number of years, the low water tide exposes the beach. The sand then extends out under the famous landmark.

This rare occurrence offers visitors the chance to stroll beneath the arch. The news then catches like fire. The event is one of the top things to do in Cabo San Lucas and Los Cabos.

How was the Arch of Cabo San Lucas formed?

Why is the arch in Cabo famous, and how was formed?

Over millions of years, the powerful waves of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez formed the Arch of Cabo San Lucas. The constant pounding of the waves against the rock caused erosion and eventually created the arch.

Granite rock erosion

The erosion of granite rock in Land’s End at Los Cabos is a unique and dynamic process. Consequently, this process has shaped the stunning landscapes of this region, including The Arch.

Over time, the wind force, water, and weathering have sculpted the granite rocks, transforming them into the breathtaking scenery we witness. Additionally, the coastline of Los Cabos features cliffs, arches, and coves.

This erosion has created some of the most beautiful, iconic landscapes that continue to shape the region today.

Granite rock formations are some of the most fascinating geological structures in the world.

The rocks formed through the solidification of magma below the Earth’s surface, comprising feldspar, quartz, and mica.

Granite rocks, renowned for their durability and resistance to weathering and erosion, make them ideal materials for construction and monuments.
